CA - KRA to Track Mobile Phone Dealers for Tax Compliance

Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued a public notice that mobile phone dealers, manufacturers and other stakeholders in phone business industry to link their devices with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Tax portal system.


According to Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Director General David Mugonyi stated that by 1st January 2025, all mobile phones will be linked to a Tax Compliance system by KRA. Mr. Mugonyi directed all mobile phones imported by importers to disclose International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number for each device to KRA. This process will start by 1st November 2024.

The State says it is mandatory for all mobile devices to be registered in National Master Database for Tax Compliance. 

''To ensure integrity and tax compliance of the mobile devices in Kenya, the Authority hereby notifies all stakeholders, including mobile network operators involved in the local assembly, importation distribution as well as connection of mobile devices to local networks, that will effect from January 1st, 2025,'' the notice reads.

The State agency further directed that all wholesalers and retailers to distribute tax-compliant devices. Telecommunication companies including Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom to ensure to connect only devices that are tax compliant verified. Operators with non-tax-compliant registered will be blacklisted.
