KENYA: Government to Roll Out M-Pox Vaccination in December

Government has officially announced M-Pox vaccination through the Ministry of Health by Public Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki. On 1st December 2024, the country will kick off vaccinations to receive adequate supply of vaccines from the Africa Centre of Disease Control (CDC) to combat spread of viruses which was reported spreading in Africa.

According to the report from MoH, it has confirmed a total of 14 Mpox cases reported in the country. These due cases are spread through traveling from one country to another. The PS said the ministry will keep key measures including training health workers and establishing specialized treatment units for a swift response.

Mpox Virus 
Mpox Virus is a severe zoonotic disease transmitted to humans from fruit bats with symptoms of severe headache, high fever and bleeding from body openings.

The government and MoH are so keen in to put mechanisms so that Kenya does not record any Mpox cases. ''As a country, we may not have seen an increase in the number, however, our neighbors are still having some cases, and it is important to note that we are not out of the woods. We must still remain very vigilant so that mpox is not going to be with us here in the long run,'' Muthoni said.

In conclusion, the ministry has enhanced surveillance at borders at least 1.5 million travelers screened across various parts such as Taita Taveta, Busia and Mombasa.
