Nairobi: Transport Fare Hikes Following Morning Rains

On Monday morning residents from Nairobi have experienced heavy rains unto which resulting to hike of fare prices.

Areas along Waiyaki Way leading to Kikuyu, Thika Road, Kitengela and Ruaka are the major towns experienced with heavy downpour causing floods along the streets. Most matatu operators have taken advantage by raising up transport fares.

Last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicted the heavy rains. Although local business owners have been interrupted including Mama Mboga. 

It is estimated during heavy rains, transport sector benefit by weighing up fare prices while most business ends up losing customers during the day.

Thika resident, Jane Wanjiru expressed her frustrations. ''Since 6 in the morning there was a lot of rain and thus was ready to go for job, but rain was not ending making to change my mind of whether not to report for job. However, I decided to go out running while raining, reaching at the stage matatus are less and fare was double price,'' she said.

Boda-boda operators with umbrellas have also increased fare prices. The roads are so wet and muddy doubling amounts of shorter rides.

Matias Chris, a resident from Kasarani has stated his frustrations about the situation. ''Nimelipa mia mbili kutoka Mwiki hadi Kasarani town, ambapo huwa nalipa mia moja tu. Hii weather ya leo tumeamka bila kutarajia kama kutanyesha,'' he said.
